Everyone’s related!

Everyone’s related!

Last July I came across a new internet start-up recommended by TechCrunch. Geni.com is a geneology website infused with social-networking. Anyway, I added a few people to my family tree along with some of their email addresses and watched it start to grow! Not even a year later, I have over 430+ connections to my family tree and relatives of mine are adding content on a daily basis. It’s fantastic!

If you’re a social-networking user and can appreciate the cleaner interface that sites such as Facebook have to offer, then you’ll really enjoy Geni.com. It’s painless and has a consistent layout.

Go check it out and plan your next big reuinion!!!

Too many Wordpress Updates

Wordpress

It’s nice to see companies feverishly updating their code and churning out releases on a regular basis, but COME ON WordPress!!! Do you seriously need a new update every week? It’s a bit of a hassle to be updating my blog and all the other clients that are running WordPress on my web server — all in the name of security.

I’m damned either way, because if I don’t upgrade these stupid things then I’ll be cursing when some script-kiddie acts all 31337 and hax my site….but I really hate spending the time almost on a weekly basis to upgrade these stupid things.

Oh well. Lets get it right the first time, shall we?

I Love Hulu

I’ve been using Hulu.com for a few months now and its gotta be one of my favorite sites on the net for streaming content. In case you haven’t already heard of it, definitely go sign up for the private beta and start watching your favorite TV shows today online! I’m tellin’ ya, I almost have no need for a cable box anymore. I just wish that there was a better option than Time Warner out here in Hawaii.

TinyURL’s are STUPID

TinyURL.com

If you’re tech-savvy, you’ve most likely been inundated lately with the barrage of web links created by users of TinyURL.com. TinyURL.com is a service that offers a unique id following their domain name (ex: http://tinyurl.com/32ndwt) This supposedly makes it easier than typing in permalinks such as (http://www.jdbaluch.com/2007/08/01/tinyurls-are-stupid/). While the size of the URL is cut down substantially, all context in the URL is lost and in an age of spyware and deception, I have no desire to click on a link that merely redirects me somewhere else. If the sender of the URL formats the link correctly from the get-go, there won’t be any problems with opening the link on the receiving end. TinyURL’s are stupid — and that’s my take on it.

To-do’s…GTD Style!

rememberthemilk-com-cn-beta

RememberTheMilk.com is one of my favorite new ajax-enabled, productivity enhancing sites. At its very core, it is nothing more than a to-do list but the added functionality of offering web services is really where Remember The Milk starts to come alive. It integrates seemlessly with both iGoogle and Google Calendar, as well as having both IM, email, and twitter support. It’s built-in API and google-styled keyboard shortcuts garners it some serious respect in my book. If you are like me and like to archive pretty much everything in your online calendar, Remember The Milk is a great complimentary product — and the price is right too!
